The fly shuttle attaches to each side and allows weaving at a quicker rate as there is less time spent than with hand catching and throwing the shuttle. 

The fly shuttle flies along the shuttle race, is caught in the box and then with a pull is thrown again. 

The fly shuttle can be used all the time, or some weavers only use them when weaving wide pieces on the loom.
